Celebrate the arrival of Spring with ninemsn’s guide to gardens and garden festivals across Australia:

New South Wales

The privately-owned Mayfield Garden takes half a day to get around and is open for just three weekends in Spring, so plan around October 19-20, October 26-27 and November 2-3 to get inside this giant garden.

The Spring Festival of Flowers at the Hunter Valley Gardens runs throughout September with an oriental theme. Visit Bowral’s Tulip Time Festival, between September 24 and October 7, foro garden tours and more than 60,000 tulips.

Australian Capital Territory

If you’re in Canberra between September 14 and October 13, be sure to go to Canberra’s Floriade Festival with its green credentials.

Queensland

The annual Carnival of Flowers takes place from September 20-29 this year and includes music and wine as well as flowers and gardens.

Victoria

The Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival (September 5-15) and Bright Spring Festival (October 19 to November 5) are highlights on the Victoria horticultural calendar. Local food, art, markets and scarecrow competitions mean there is something for everyone at these events.

Western Australia

It’s the 50th anniversary of the Kings Park festival; expect music, exhibitions and dance from September 1-30.

Tasmania

The Spring Community Festival takes place over the weekend of October 5-6 with children’s entertainment and new displays at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.
