What to do on the Gold Coast this August
Fancy a getaway to the sunniest part of the country? Even in winter the sun shines bright on the Gold Coast. If you’re planning a quick holiday or have a day or two to spare during a business trip, here are ten ways to make the most of your time on the Gold Coast.
1. 8th Annual Ormeau Lions Fair
Over two days of fun, rides and adventure, the Ormeau Fair will take place at Brien Harris Oval on 9 and 10 August. Known fondly to locals as the “mini EKKA,” Ormeau will celebrate its eighth year in 2014. If the past eight years are anything to judge by, it will only go from strength to strength. Take the kids down for the day (or two!), and rest easy knowing that all money raised goes straight back into the community.
2. Gold Coast Science and Tech Fair
A great idea for bright kids or senior high school students with an interest in science and technology. The Gold Coast Science and Tech Fair will be held at Broadwater Parklands in Southport over the weekend on 15 and 16 August.
3. 2014 Bravehearts Highway Thunder
Get ready to rumble! Highway Thunder will roar into the Gold Coast on August 15 and showcase a range of cars, motorcycles, and trucks to support White Balloon Day. Events will include a “Show ‘n’ Shine” car contest, entertainment, food, drink, markets, rides and raffles for the whole family. The convoy departs from Yatala Drive-In at 8am, and will arrive at the Broadwater Parklands at 9:30am.
4. Gold Coast Four Day Golf Schoo
Think you’re a putting pro? Perhaps your drive needs a bit of work. Either way, the Gold Coast Four Day Golf School is the perfect opportunity to brush up on your skills, or maybe even learn a new thing or two. The course includes 20 hours of coaching from professional golf instructors, four nights of twin share accommodation, as well as daily breakfast, lunch and more! It’s well worth your time from 11-15 August.
5. Broadbeach Jazz Festival
Add some rhythm to your life at this free event! To celebrate Oasis Shopping Centre’s 25th Birthday, the Broadbeach Jazz Festival will take place from 15-17 August. No tickets needed, just show up ready to enjoy some of Australia’s best jazz music from leading artists, such as Rhonda Burchmore, Galapagos Duck and Tatu Rei.
6. Tomewin Mountain Challenge Running Festival
Looking for a workout away from home? We’ve got that and then some! The annual Tomewin Mountain Challenge Running Festival returns for the fourth time on 17 August. This event is a challenge even for seasoned runners, with the 21 kilometre half marathon through the Currumbin Valley the highlight of the day. Every age, skill and experience level will be represented, and every competitor will receive a participation banner to remember the day. The battle will be held over 2 and 3 August at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
8. Become a Better Cyclist
Did someone say free event? This three hour course is open to anyone over the age of 15, and kicks off at 9:30am at Runaway Bay on 2 August. Best for intermediate cyclists, you will learn more about road safety and how to improve your cycling skills.
9. Wombat Stew – The Musical!
This is a brand new stage production that your kids will absolutely love. Based on the children’s book by Marcia K Vaughan, Wombat Stew will have three shows, all packed into Wednesday 6 August at 10:30am, 12:45pm, and 6pm respectively.
